ObsPy MoPaD

A tool for plotting focal sphere diagrams and decomposing seismic moment tensors.

Introduction

ObsPy MoPaD

ObsPy MoPaD is a specialized command-line utility within the ObsPy framework, designed for seismologists and geophysicists to analyze and visualize seismic moment tensors. This tool, accessible via the command obspy-mopad, offers robust features for:

  • Plotting and Saving Focal Sphere Diagrams: Commonly known as 'Beachballs', these diagrams visually represent earthquake focal mechanisms.
  • Decomposition and Conversion: Allows detailed analysis by decomposing seismic moment tensors into their constituent parts.
  • Integration with GMT: Generates coordinates for focal sphere diagrams to be used with GMT's psxy, providing an alternative where other tools like psmeca or pscoupe may not suffice.

Ideal for researchers and professionals in seismology, MoPaD supports advanced seismic data visualization and analysis, making it a critical tool for earthquake studies and geophysical research. Its open-source nature under the GNU Lesser General Public License ensures accessibility and adaptability for various scientific applications.
